ARPA-E
A bill is currently being considered by Congress to create a DARPA-like research organization focusing on energy. It would be overseen by the Department of Energy and, at present, is called “ARPA-E.” If approved in the FY08 federal budget, ARPA-E would provide aggressive funding for innovative, out-of-the-box, energy-related research projects carried out by industry, universities and consortia of groups, including federal laboratories. This program is intended to “give the best and brightest science and technology experts unprecedented flexibility and resources to develop new technologies through high-risk, high-return research addressing the nation’s most pressing energy problems.”
